Legal Guidance – Surface Water

Guidance for the disposal of surface water from proposed development sites is primarily contained in PPS 25, which was enforced in 2006. One of purposes of the Planning Policy Statement is to ensure that the development considers and provides a suitably designed Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS), for the development.

Further regulations that need to be considered are:

British Water has produced technical guidance, "Guidance to Proprietory Sustainable Drainage Systems and Components - SUDS", which has been widely accepted by industry decision makers and this will also be used in providing solutions.

SUDS has been incorporated for the first time in Sewers for Adoption, 6th Edition, which will require careful design of the proposed SUDS to obtain full adoption from the water undertaker.

The Code for Sustainable Homes measures the sustainability of a new home and uses a 1 to 6 Star rating system to indicate the performance of the new house. It is predicted that this Code will become mandatory in 2008 and may only become achievable with the use of SUDS and rainwater recycling.
